The concept of an Intranet is too broad to resume it in one sentence and perhaps is best described as a set of custom applications.

Intranets are like a virtual farm and it's resources are shared by all the users. The functionality of it's applications and resources are delimited by the client or business requirements, and it's functionality can range from very basic to extremely complex.

Our applications are based on open source code (PHP, ASP). This has the advantage that changing the functionality of an application is relatively easy, and the application is not platform dependant.
